Mylor RE-cool Brings a New Approach to Vape Cooling Formulation

Mylor is entering that conversation with RE-cool, a cooling blend solution designed as an alternative to several familiar cooling agents. The company brought the technology to InterTabac 2026 in Dortmund, Germany, giving industry professionals an opportunity to sample the blend and compare its sensory characteristics with WS-23 and other cooling options.

Why Cooling Has Become a Formulation Challenge

For years, WS-23 has played an important role in the development of ice-style vape flavors. Its popularity comes in part from its ability to create a strong cooling sensation without adding a dominant flavor of its own.

That makes it useful in everything from berry and watermelon recipes to tropical fruit, candy, beverage, and dessert profiles. A flavorist can increase the cooling effect without necessarily changing the identity of the primary flavor.

The difficulty comes when formulators have to replace a familiar ingredient while maintaining the same sensory balance.

Alternative cooling agents can behave differently in a finished formula. Some may provide less cooling, while others can contribute their own sensory characteristics. Bitter or herbal notes can become particularly noticeable when a formula requires a higher concentration of the substitute.

That creates a difficult technical problem: the cooling effect needs to be strong, but the cooling ingredient shouldn't become the dominant part of the flavor.

Germany's Regulatory Discussion Puts Cooling in the Spotlight

Germany has been an important part of the European discussion surrounding cooling agents used in e-cigarette products.

The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, known as BfR, published an assessment in 2025 examining WS-23, WS-3, and WS-5. The agency highlighted the limited availability of data concerning the inhalation toxicity of these substances. A subsequent 2026 BfR opinion examined nine additional cooling agents, including menthol and other substances used for their cooling properties.

For manufacturers, developments like these make formulation planning more complicated. Companies have to consider not only how a flavor tastes today but also whether its ingredient profile will remain suitable as regulatory requirements develop.

Mylor Looks Beyond a Simple Ingredient Swap

Mylor says its approach with RE-cool was to move away from the idea of simply finding another molecule that behaves exactly like WS-23.

The company describes RE-cool as a cooling blend based on sensory signal interaction. According to Mylor, the product was developed through hundreds of formulation trials and sensory evaluations.

The goal is to reproduce the desired cooling experience while keeping the rest of the flavor formula intact.

Mylor says RE-cool does not contain WS-23, WS-3, WS-5, or menthol and is formulated with Germany's evolving restrictions in mind. Those are company claims about the product's formulation and regulatory positioning, so manufacturers would still need to verify compliance against the specific rules and markets applicable to their products.

Cooling Without Taking Over the Flavor

One of the more interesting claims surrounding RE-cool involves flavor neutrality.

A cooling ingredient can technically produce a powerful sensation while still creating problems if it changes the taste of the finished recipe. For example, a delicate peach flavor can lose some of its natural sweetness if the cooling component adds noticeable herbal or medicinal characteristics.

Mylor says RE-cool was designed to minimize that problem. The company describes the blend as having an almost neutral flavor profile, allowing fruit and sweet notes to remain prominent.

That approach could be especially useful for recipes where cooling is intended to support the main flavor rather than define it.

A Focus on the Finish Matters Too

The beginning of a vape isn't the only point at which a cooling blend has to perform well.

Mylor says another objective behind RE-cool was to create a cleaner finish by reducing bitterness and astringency within its recommended dosage range. According to the company, testing showed a consistent cooling release without the bitterness becoming increasingly noticeable during extended use.

Again, these performance results are based on Mylor's reported testing. Independent testing and formulation trials remain important when evaluating how any cooling system performs across different recipes.

InterTabac Put the Technology in Front of Industry Professionals

InterTabac 2026 provided Mylor with an opportunity to present RE-cool directly to the companies working on flavor development and product manufacturing.

The event took place in Dortmund from September 15 through September 17, 2026, bringing together hundreds of companies from around the world. Regulatory developments, market access, and product innovation were among the issues highlighted at the event.

For Mylor, the exhibition also provided a setting where potential customers could compare RE-cool with established cooling ingredients and discuss formulation requirements directly with the company.

The Cooling Category Is Changing

The development of alternatives such as RE-cool illustrates how regulatory changes can influence technical innovation. When a familiar ingredient becomes subject to greater scrutiny, formulators have to solve several problems simultaneously: regulatory suitability, cooling strength, flavor neutrality, and overall sensory consistency.

Mylor's RE-cool is positioned as one response to that challenge. Its stated aim isn't simply to make a replacement ingredient that feels cold, but to provide formulators with a broader cooling solution that can work within complex flavor systems.
