How to Choose Your Nicotine Strength

Knowing How to Choose Your Nicotine Strength

To enjoy the perfect vape, a lot of things need to be in order.  You need to have an e-liquid flavor that you love, a device that’s reliable and produces adequate vapor, a compatible cartridge, and, of course, the right nicotine strength.  In fact, there’s reason to argue that the nicotine strength at which you vape is the most important factor of all, for reasons that we will be getting into today.

So, that being said, is there a sure way to guarantee the perfect nicotine strength when choosing an e-liquid?  After all, everyone’s nicotine-related needs are unique, so how does one know if a high, low or average strength will suit them?  And, what about the difference between salt nic and freebase nicotine?  Well, to make your life easier, we’ve made a guide to choosing the perfect nicotine strength based on your individual preferences.

Why Choosing the Right Nicotine Strength is So Important

Choosing the right nicotine strength is extremely crucial, especially if you’ve just transitioned from smoking.  Why?  Because if you’re a nicotine user, you need to ensure that you continue to enjoy the same level of nicotine that you’re used to as a cigarette smoker.  This is the key to successfully transitioning from tobacco to vaping without ever looking back.  And, it’s all too common to go with the wrong nicotine strength, because the enormous selection that’s available leaves more room for error.

The Difference Between Salt Nic and Freebase Nic

Hot to Choose The Right Nicotine StrengthBefore we begin, let’s quickly touch upon the difference between freebase nic and salt nic, as both options are widely available today.  Freebase nic came first, and it’s a type of nicotine made from chemically modified nicotine compounds.  It is designed to be more potent than natural nicotine, as it was made to be used by tobacco companies decades ago.  The problem is that when this type of nicotine is vaporized, it becomes very harsh due to the chemical instability.  This means that vapers who use freebase nic tend to go with lower concentrations, or use a higher concentration at a lower output level, to avoid the harshness.

Then, there’s salt-based nicotine, which is a purer form of nicotine, and is a relatively new invention.  This type of nicotine better mimics that which you’d get out of a cigarette because it is very potent without being harsh.  Therefore, you can vape salt nic e-liquid at higher concentrations while using lower output levels, and get that subtle buzz and that throat hit that you’re used to.  Choose which one appeals to you more based on your former smoking habits.

What Nicotine Level Should I Vape? An E-Juice Strength Guide

Now, let’s discuss the type of nicotine level that’s right for you.  We’re only going to be discussing freebase nicotine in this section, as salt nic e-liquids tend to come in only one strength, which is 50mg, with very few other options (30mg and 25mg).

If You’re a Beginner

How to Choose Your Nic StrengthIf you’ve just switched from tobacco to vaping, you’ll want to choose a nicotine strength that reflects your former smoking habit.  Those who smoked a pack a day should go with a 16-18mg range, as this will supply them with a comparable amount of nicotine per day.  Those who smoked more will be happy with any strength above 20mg, while those who were lighter smokers can go as low as 6 milligrams.

If You’re an Experienced Vaper

If you’re an experienced vaper, you may want to consider decreasing your nicotine strength.  Why?  Because when we vape freebase nicotine, our bodies process is differently from the nicotine in cigarettes.  This means that gradually, we become less addicted to that punch of nicotine that comes with each hit, as the nicotine remains in the system in a more subtle, spread out way.  Therefore, you can probably feel satisfied with a lower concentration.  Additionally, many experienced vapers start to be less interested in the nicotine content, and more interested in cloud-chasing, if they’re using sub-ohm systems.  The less nicotine there is in a vape juice, the thicker and larger the clouds will be, because nicotine thins out the vape juice, decreasing the volume of the vapor.

When to Increase Your Nicotine Strength

At some point, you may find that the nicotine amount in your e-liquid just isn’t doing it for you, and you’re not feeling satisfied.  You should increase your nicotine strength if you find that you’re still craving cigarettes, as this indicates the nicotine content isn’t adequate for your needs.  Similarly, it’s a good idea to increase that amount if you find that you’re chain-vaping just to feel satisfied.  Increase the concentration in small increments.

When to Decrease Your Nicotine Strength

Some people realize that their nicotine strength is too high for them, and so they decide to scale it back.  If you feel dizzy, nauseous or generally unwell after an average vaping session, you’re probably taking in too much nicotine.  Similarly, if you feel a harsh sensation along your throat when you vape, decreasing it is a good idea.  Again, you want to do this gradually and in small increments for the best results.

When to Leave Your Nicotine Strength Alone

But, not everyone needs to change their nicotine strength.  Sometimes, the nicotine level you’re vaping is just right for you, and so no adjustments are needed.

Other Factors That Contribute to Your Nicotine Intake

Be aware that sometimes, adjustments can be made that change the way in which you experience your nicotine without requiring that you change your e-liquid’s strength.  For instance, the higher the output your device is set at, the more vapor you’ll take in per puff, and the more vapor you take in per puff, the more nicotine you take in as well.  So, adjusting the output settings can determine how much nicotine you get while you vape.

Another factor is the coil.  The coil also has an effect on how much vapor you take in per hit, and it also determines how strong that nicotine hit feels.  Some coils can increase the throat hit sensation that so many vapers enjoy, so don’t be afraid to play around with the coil of your device in an attempt to experience your nicotine in a way that’s more suited to your preferences.

Choosing the right nicotine strength is paramount if you want to not only enjoy your vapes as much as possible, but also be less tempted to go back to smoking.
