Why You Should Buy a Variable Voltage Device

by Jenny Spring

The electronic cigarette and vaping industry has certainly expanded within the past few years. This growth has not only been with the number of vapers, but also with respect to the variety of devices available as well. There are so many products to choose from, it is often difficult to know which products are worth the money and which are just novelties. Variable voltage batteries are one of the most popular devices available on the market today. The ability to adjust the output voltage of your batteries sounds great, but what are the benefits to them?

A Brief History of Variable Voltage Batteries:

During the beginning few years of the electronic cigarette industry, the only available batteries were constant voltage ones. The voltage output of the batteries was set to work optimally with the atomizer coil used with that particular setup. However, as technology advanced and new products were released to the market, vapers were afforded several options to select from. Among these choices were various clearomizers with a range of atomizer resistances. In order to use assorted clearomizers and cartomizers with varying resistances, the voltage output of the battery needed to be change accordingly. As a result, manufacturers developed batteries with built-in regulators that allow the user to adjust the voltage output of the battery.

The record is unclear as to which company invented the first variable voltage battery for electronic cigarettes. However, Joyetech is certainly the first brand to popularize it and make it a commercial hit. The Joyetech eGo-C Twist Variable Voltage Battery was a breakthrough device when it was first released. It allowed vapers to use a variety of clearomizers and atomizer resistances with the same battery. This capability set the groundwork for the host of new products that has followed since.

What Are Variable Voltage Batteries?

Variable voltage batteries are electronic cigarette batteries that offer the ability to adjust the output voltage. The first variable voltage batteries were eGo style batteries with a voltage adjustment knob on the end of the device. The Joyetech eGo-C Twist is one of the first and most popular of such batteries, followed by the Kanger Evod VV. Although today digital advanced personal vaporizers offer variable voltage and variable wattage capabilities, the eGo style variable voltage batteries are still very popular and widely used to this day.

The chemistry and general composition of variable voltage batteries are essentially the same as constant voltage ones. They are generally equipped with lithium-ion technology. Some of the more modern advanced batteries are made with lithium-ion polymer battery cells, which are capable of offering higher mAh per square inch. The primary difference between constant voltage and variable voltage batteries is that the latter is also furnished with a voltage regulator that allows the user to control the amount of the battery’s voltage potential is released to the atomizer. While most constant voltage batteries have an output of about 3.7V, variable voltage batteries have a voltage range that can be selected. The available range is generally between 3.2V – 4.8V.

Types of Variable Voltage Batteries:

There are two primary types of variable voltage batteries: manual and digital. Manual variable voltage batteries, such as the Joyetech eGo-C Twist, the Kanger Evod VV, and the Vision Spinner 2 have a rotating dial that increases and decreases the voltage. The dial is connected to a regulator that controls the voltage output released by the battery.

Similar to the manual versions, digital variable voltage batteries also allow for the power output of the battery to be modified. However, this is accomplished through an embedded chip, which governs the power based on the setting. Digital variable voltage batteries, such as the Innokin iTaste VV and the Eleaf iStick are generally equipped with an OLED screen, and offer many other features in addition to their variable voltage capabilities. These devices are commonly referred to as Advanced Personal Vaporizers (APVs).

What Are The Benefits of Variable Voltage Batteries?

Variable voltage batteries offer numerous benefits, making their slightly higher cost well worth it. Their wide power output range provides for a much more versatile and enjoyable vaping experience. They can be used with a variety of atomizer resistances; they allow for a much more customizable vape; and they afford the ability to fine-tune the power to work optimally with various e-liquids.

One of the primary benefits of variable voltage batteries is that they can be adjusted to work perfectly with a wide range of atomizer resistances. Most variable voltage batteries can be set from between 3.2V to 4.8V. This allows the battery to accommodate atomizer resistances from between 1.2 ohms to over 3 ohms. This flexibility is wonderful for those who like to switch between various clearomizers.

Another benefit of using variable voltage batteries with your electronic cigarette setup is that is that it can be fine-tuned based on the e-liquid you are vaping. Various e-liquid flavors have a sweet spot that may be higher or lower than others. With the ability to adjust the voltage output, you can hit the sweet spot regardless of the liquid. This is also true for liquids with varying PG-to-VG consistencies. VG dominant e-liquids generally require a bit more voltage than PG dominant ones. The thicker consistency of vegetable glycerin requires more power to vaporize properly.

Variable voltage e-cig batteries provide an altogether more customizable vaping experience. The ability to alternate between clearomizers with varying ohms resistance as well as assorted e-liquids provides for a much more versatile setup. Moreover, depending on each vaper’s personal preference, variable voltage batteries allow you to alter the throat hit of the vape as well. Increasing voltage makes the vapor hotter and stronger, which translates into a harder throat hit. Conversely, reducing the voltage output softens the hit, making it smoother and cooler. Of course, other factors contribute to the throat hit as well, such as the nicotine strength of your e-liquid.

Although when coupled with the proper atomizer coil, a constant voltage device can provide a satisfactory vape, variable voltage batteries offer an array of benefits that make them well worth having. The ability to use an assortment of clearomizers on a single battery, each set to work optimally with it, is a fantastic ability to have. Furthermore, alternating between e-liquids is a much more pleasurable experience when armed with a variable voltage setup. Variable voltage electronic cigarette batteries produce an overall better and much more customizable vaping experience, making them a must have product.

Thank you for this article. I have had the Alien MOD for about 6 weeks now and was always annoyed by the heat of the vapor (set at 62 Watts). After reading this I changed it to 52.5 Watts and it stopped the hot vapor. Thanks again.
